How to choose and replace the keyboard in your laptop?

On most laptop models, replacement is not a big challenge. It is worth buying a keyboard yourself. Then we are sure that the installed product will be of the right quality and protected by the warranty. On our website you will find high quality Green Cell keyboards, which are covered by a 24-month warranty. In this article we will show you a simple way to choose and replace the keyboard in your laptop with a new one.

The best way to start the selection of the keyboard is to disassemble the original model – a detailed guide on how to do this can be found in the section “Replacing the keyboard – step by step”. Once you have dismantled the keyboard, pay attention to two details – the hooks with which you fix it in the case and the tape.

At this point we can start looking for a new keyboard. Just enter the model of your laptop into the search engine on our website. Let’s assume that we have a Lenovo G50, this is the phrase we write in the field. We immediately find the keyboard that matches this model, we still have to make sure that all parameters are compatible.

  1. We check if the key layout is identical. It is quite common to issue several editions of the same model, which have different key layouts.
  2. The second parameter is the already mentioned hooks – they must be in the same number and in the same places. We recommend using product pictures. In Lenovo G50 there are five hooks (on the lower edge).
  3. The last and most important thing to check is the tape that we connect the keyboard to the motherboard. It must have the same shape as the original one – otherwise we will not be able to connect it. In case of backlit keyboards there are two tapes that can be connected separately.

If both the layout of the keys, hooks and the tape look the same, we can purchase the keyboard and replace it.

Keyboard replacement – step by step

Be aware that your laptop is very vulnerable to mechanical damage, so be careful with every step.

  1. Turn the laptop over, unplug it and pull out the battery.
  2. Close the laptop and rotate it with the matrix facing down. Loosen the screws on the bottom. Usually the appropriate screws are described as KB or have a keyboard drawing. If there are also screws in place of the battery, remove these too.
  3. Turn and open the laptop. In many cases, there is a strip above the keyboard that masks the keyboard mount. Gently lift it, and remove the screws underneath it.
  4. When you unscrew the screws, lift the keyboard, preferably with a flat screwdriver. Underneath the keyboard is a signal tape that is attached to the laptop motherboard. Gently open the socket lock and release it.
  5. To make sure the keyboard fits, count the pins, which are the lines on the signal tape. The keyboard you bought must have the same number of pins.
  6. Mount the keypad in reverse order to point 4. Place the signal tape in the appropriate socket and secure it with the lock, then screw in all screws.

That’s it! You can enjoy the comfort of your new keyboard

You see? Replacing the keyboard is not such a demanding task. There are also devices where the process is very complicated and we recommend that you hire a specialist – this is what happens when the keyboard is riveted (for example in MacBooks). Then we also recommend buying it ourselves – then we have total confidence in the quality of the product, which is additionally covered by the warranty.
